Here we see how to refurbish a painted oak kitchen. Refurbishing oak kitchens with a hand painted finish is part and parcel of the expert service from Martin Guest, Traditional painter covering Birmingham / Worcester.

oak kitchen - before painting This is a typical scenario for Traditional Painter kitchen specialists – a client has a well made oak kitchen, which is extremely functional and still in good condition. Although it ticks all the practicality boxes, aesthetically, it is just a little / lot out of step with modern tastes.

What do you do, replace or repaint?

Martin repaints oak kitchens for about a tenth of the cost of replacing with a new one.

Preparation is meticulous

Firstly, the entire kitchen area was “sheeted” up with polythene and worktops and floors covered ready for the preparation phase. It is vital that the area of work is as clean and dust-free as possible.

The doors are degreased and sanded with industrial quality sanders, utilising the very best in dust extraction technology. This is not only great for the client and paint finish, but also, selfishly, me; no-one wants to work in a dirty, hazardous environment. (Original article)

Farrow and ball eggshell kitchen He primed it with high adhesion shellac-based primer and finished with several coats of Farrow and Ball exterior eggshell paint, sanding between coats.

As with all the specialists associated with this site, Martin has a wealth of experience in all areas of decorating, and although he is a firm believer in the traditional approach to the trade, he has adapted his working practices to embrace new and improved versions of essential kit.

Think about the vast difference between conventional sandpaper / dusting brushes and the Mirka dust extractor / Abranet sanding system. The approaches are completely different, as are the quantities of dust deposited around the house! In most scenarios, Martin with Abranet sanding blocks and assorted dust extraction power sanders is far more productive and cleaner than any old school decorator armed exclusively with a piece of scratch and a jamb duster.

Martin is always happy to chip in with pointers and advice on materials, tools and procedures over on our painting and decorating forum. It is open to all homeowners, DIY and trade with an interest in decorating to a high standard.
