An oak kitchen in Northampton renovated and hand painted
Traditional Painter, Paul Barber, hand paints kitchens for amongst others, A Bell & Co Ltd of Kingsthorpe. He knows his craft, and this oak kitchen in Northampton needed rather more than a clean down, before getting to the finishing line. It came out well though. Photos from the client.
Repair first
I recently undertook the refurbishment of a 15 year old bespoke oak fitted kitchen, It was a very well made in solid oak in a traditional farm house style, but was in need of a lot of attention.
The 1st job was to carry out any repairs required, which included the removal of all the doors and easing each one, as required.
The fridge door had a split in the top panel about 5mm wide and 400mm long. I fitted 2 metal straps to the back of the panel to brace it and glued and made good with 2 pack wood filler.
All the furniture was then sanded down to remove the old coatings of varnish and polish and then degreased with Krud Kutter Original.
Priming
The next step was to apply the 1st coat of Zinsser BIN shellac primer, then flat down with finishing paper and fill any minor areas. Sand smooth and remove dust.
Paint
I applied 2 coats of water-borne Tikkurila Feelings Furniture undercoat, mixed by Holman Specialist Paints to match the top coat colour. This paint is a pleasure to use and is a marked change to the shellac based BIN which really makes you work hard.
All ready for the final 2 coats of Feelings Furniture top coat in a semi matt finish, colour matched to the equivalent of Ball green from the Farrow & Ball colour pallet.
Finish up
The final job was to fit new chrome handles to the original holes. The result a lovely modern hand painted kitchen, looking like brand new for a fraction of the cost of new.
Here’s a good before and after
Paul has noticed a major increase in enquiries for his kitchen painting services. Ordinarily he would be busy painting new installations, but these comprise only a fraction of the kitchen painting work he does now. Refurbishing & repainting existing kitchens is the core work for him, and Traditonal Painters across the country.

A member of the prestigious Wallpaper Hangers Guild, and kitchen painter for A Bell & Co Ltd of Kingsthorpe, Paul has been working at the high end of decorating for over 35 years now. Add Paul Barber contact details to your address book
.
If you are in Northants and have a kitchen to revive, email Paul a few photos to show the full extent of the kitchen. It is not critical at this stage, but if you know the substrate (wood, laminate, lacquered or waxed) let him know; share any ideas you have had for colours or finishes; do you want a change of handles etc? and he will do the rest and let you know everything you need, before proceeding further.
If the budget, timescale etc fall in with your plans, you can take it from there and Paul will arrange to come and finalise all the details.
Paul has been in the trade 35 years and understands that over the long haul, it is all about him sticking to his beliefs in highest quality and value, over trying to be the cheapest, or the fastest or the most average, or the one who can get away with least coats to get in and out. £100 to hand paint a door with special kitchen and furniture paint isn’t for everyone, but neither are the alternatives!
Please share it on Twitter, Facebook, or print it out for reference. Thanks.
