Painted melamine kitchen in Northwich
Traditional Painter member Mark Roberts recently completed this project, a painted melamine kitchen in Northwich in Cheshire. It was quite the transformation of a wood effect kitchen.

When Mark’s client contacted him, he asked for photos of the kitchen as it was.

Jane was no stranger to the Traditional Painter online enquiry process. Back in 2012 we painted her wooden kitchen and several pieces of furniture in another home.
Can you even paint melamine?
There is a still a misconception floating around that you can’t paint melamine. It is too shiny, it isn’t wood, paint will surely peel off. As far back as 1997 it has been safe to paint melamine, assuming you know the right high adhesion primer to use.
A decision also has to be made on sheen level. Matt is growing in popularity but eggshell or satin are still the number one choices.
Mark’s final proposed specification was Benjamin Moore High hiding all purpose primer (PDF), finished with the excellent Ultra Spec Scuff-x eggshell. A well proven trick of the trade to ensure full deep coverage is to mix the primer in the same colour as the topcoat, ‘Manchester Tan HC-81‘ .
The painting process
There are a multitude of options for kitchen painters to work through before deciding on the ideal way to paint your kitchen. Traditional Painters specialise in hand painting older wooden kitchens, but with melamine, you already have the smoothest finish possible. Mark decided that spraying the doors and hand painting the frames made most sense.
Since Covid reared its ugly head, Traditional Painter members have been following the comprehensive working policy linked to at the top of every page on the website. By removing the doors and drawers and spraying them in his workshop, Mark caused almost no disruption in Jane’s kitchen. And Jane was very pragmatic and understanding, keeping contact to a minimum while Mark worked his magic on site.
Doors & drawer fronts – sprayed 4 coats (2 x primer and 2 top coats)
Frames – hand painted 4 coats.
The results speak for themselves.
