Options to upgrade a kitchen, Ireland 2014
Does your kitchen look like one of the images below? In my experience these kitchens would be the most common to be found in different parts of Ireland…
Solid Timber (oak), doors & frame
Solid Timber Doors, Laminated Frame
Previously Painted (often in poor condition, sub-standard materials, and/or application)
Your kitchen may look like one of these or share some similarities? Fitted 10, 20, 30 years ago, tired looking but still working well?
“Is painting your kitchen a realistic option?” … Big Time, YES!!
Statistics show that between 30%-40% of homeowners would like to make changes to their kitchen above any other room. Also, approximately 50% of all small/medium sized home contracts are carried out in the kitchen.
What are the cost implications of a replacement kitchen?
The cost of fitting a new kitchen can be mind-boggling. In the examples above we have some big numbers.
– A solid oak kitchen, of a size can run into the €10,000’s
– You can save money by having a laminated frame but not much.
– An off the shelf, B&Q or Ikea kitchen will be in excess of €5000. These are often poor quality specifications.
– The bespoke, designer kitchen seen painted in the picture above cost €75,000 (to replace the work-top alone would cost a small fortune).
Alternative to replacement – hand painted
If the layout of your kitchen suits your needs and you would rather keep it, if at all possible, My Hand Painted Furniture can help. The images below are the above kitchens after hand painting…

Painting Your Kitchen
In a forthcoming post I will outline the process; the high end, industry leading equipment and materials I use, the process from start to finish and how it accommodates you, the homeowner…
An indication of cost
Bearing in mind the numbers you have read about the cost of new: Count up all your doors, drawers & features & multiply that number by €100. This will give you a ball-park figure, and based on our experience, after a closer look, the final price we give you should be no more than 10% either side of this €100 yardstick.
The solid oak & oak/laminate kitchens above were in the region of €2000 and the designer painted kitchen, approx. €5000. When compared to the many thousands they would cost to replace, these figures represent a massive saving for homeowners.
Going beyond painting
We can also carry out works on the rest of the room; doors woodwork, to complete the transformation of the room. If you would like replacement handles, we can do that as well.
As you can see, for a fraction of the cost of a kitchen refit, Adam Bermingham, Traditional Painter for Ireland, will give you what the kitchen companies can’t; the kitchen of your dreams, a flawless, highly durable finish, in the colour of your choice at a price you can afford.
