Latest topics on Traditional Painter forum

Ladder Limb This was a review of a new attachment for ladder work. There was a good question about Health and Safety on ladders and as a result, we all learnt a thing or two – mainly Ladder Limb have done their homework!

Paint for stained glass window effect Traditional Painter, Mark Nash, answered that question pretty quickly.

Fairy Liquid as paint conditioner You wouldn’t believe what the old boys like Martin Dunn did with Fairy Liquid! And for clarification, because I didn’t know this either, Mark Nash grandfather taught him to add a drop of Fairy Liquid to water or oil based paint to prevent cissing.

Spray gun Vs brush for eggshell This was posted by a home decorator, who also asked the question over on Bib ‘n Brace forum run by Colin Taylor, who coincidentally covers Cornwall / Devon Traditional Painter kitchen work. By the end of the questions and answers, I think it had covered every angle from which conditioner is suitable for Farrow and Ball estate eggshell, to “How many coats have gone onto the cornice in question”…

Can decorator merchants correctly advise on right ladder for the job Sound advice required, as ladders are a source of much angst and injury to painters.

My doors and windows are currently treated with Sadolin. I would like to brighten them up with a pastel colour. I think I heard that Sandtex do a pastel wood paint/stain?
Could I use something like this over Sadolin or would I have to go back to bare wood?

  7. Andy Crichton Andy Crichton

Make sure the current coating is sanded smooth (There is no need to go back to the bare wood if the Sadolin is adhering well.)

Make sure any knots are sealed, best to spot prime with 2 coats of Zinsser BIN.

You are now in a position to follow the Sandtex spec for “sound previously painted surfaces”. Hope that helps.
