Long time client
In 2012, Gillian read through the Traditional Painter website looking for some advice on how to hand paint her bespoke wooden kitchen. When she had finished that part of the project she moved onto the decorating. It was just before my time.
Having been inspired by your web site to repaint our kitchen, I have ordered paints from Little Greene following an excellent online colour pallette… Just wondered if you could help me with advice on how to paint the walls. They have previously been painted with Crown solo one coat vinyl silk. I ordered LG Ultimatt emulsion to go over this. Will sanding the walls be sufficient, or will I need a specialist undercoat. I feel quite confident to go ahead on the cabinets, but not sure about the walls.
Many thanks in advance
Hand painting the kitchen in Woburn Sands in 2019
I joined Traditional Painter in 2013 and been there ever since painting kitchens in Northampton, Buckinghamshire, Beds and Hertfordshire. When Gillian contacted us again to have her kitchen painted, it was my pleasure.
The kitchen was very well made but in need of a full refurbishment. I had to ease most of the doors, and the drawer runners all needed refitting. They had worked loose over the years and the clients had tried to correct the problem without success. I like a bit of woodwork, and repositioned, glued and screwed the runners back into the correct position so they worked perfectly.
Hand painting Neptune furniture
There was also a Neptune sideboard to decorate. I had to sand out quite a few brush marks from the factory finish. But once prepared to my standards, I hand painted it in the client’s choice of colour. Neptune furniture have their own colour collection, this was a lovely soft grey called Cobble.
I choose the paint, you choose the colour
I have nothing against Neptune’s own paint, we have known about it for a while. See this thread in 2014 on the Traditional Painter forum. where my colleague, Emma Brown, Traditional Painter for Kent explained about its flow and coverage. Made by Bradite, it’s alright! However I have developed my own preferred system usually built around Tikkurila finishes. I can have any colour matched from any range, so we are all happy! See most of my case studies, finished in Tikkurila paint. Like this, usually 30% matt-satin.
Upcycling kitchens is my speciality
The main innovation behind the Traditional Painter approach to kitchen painting is that we predominantly refurbish older kitchens. Conventionally, there was a relatively small number of specialist kitchen painters working nationwide, travelling away, painting almost exclusively brand new installations for high end high cost kitchen companies. I was painting kitchens back in the 80’s, and whilst I am not saying I never painted an old kitchen before 2013, it was rare. Maybe a repaint.
I now combine my “new kitchen” painting skills with decades of experience preparing and painting every conceivable surface as a specialist decorator. So I balance traditional techniques with hard wearing kitchen and furniture paints. No kitchen of any age or type is too problematic for me to upcycle. We make it possible for all homeowners across the country to have a custom painted kitchen which was largely unthinkable 10 years ago.
It is all in the detail. A little extra touch, I cleaned and oiled the bespoke gun metal hinges that had seized up over the years. And I also fitted new handles supplied by the client.
As you can see from the review posted, they were very happy with the end results.

I cannot recommend Paul highly enough. Our kitchen was good quality and hand built, but about 25 years old and definitely in need of some attention. I would not have thought it possible to transform the units so dramatically.
Paul took the doors away and they came back looking as new, the carcasses were renovated and painted in situ and he managed to do this without leaving a mess at all. He fitted new door handles and refurbished the existing hinges.
We had a free-standing unit which he painted the same colour, and the quality of the work means it looks as though it has just been delivered from the showroom.
Paul is very good at what he does, and consequently you may have to book a few months in advance as he is understandably much in demand. We are so pleased with the transformation of our kitchen and as a bonus he is great company to have around.
Please share it on Twitter, Facebook, or print it out for reference. Thanks.
