Traditional Painter cover Lancashire here are a couple of tips involved when refurbishing an oak hand painted kitchen

oak kitchen (Lee Simone)

Preparation as usual the key

The first step is always to wash and degrease with a reliable eco cleaner for decorating. So Pro Clean is a good option since Krudkutter was discontinued, and is even more effective if using the Mirka Mirlon pads to clean off and provide a key at the same time.

(As you can see in the image below they are a very flexible abrasive material, making them doubly useful on intricate mouldings as well as flat surfaces.

Mirka Mirlon flexible sanding

Where you have an oak or lacquered oak kitchen, it could appear perfectly fine when primed in oil, but when you apply water based top coats there can be staining problems with tannin which can be drawn through the oil primer.

To avoid bleed through caused by water-borne top coats, one option is to apply two coats of Otex oil based primer, followed by two coats of Tikkurila Empire, which is an oil based eggshell. Both these products can be mixed by Holman’s into any colour and together make a bombproof reliable system over resinous hardwoods, ideal for an oak hand painted kitchen.

It’s a little slower drying than Tikkurila Feelings, and kitchen tough.

…thanks for the reply. I am sure I’m missing dozens of tricks when it comes to the top products and processes which the TP experts use! The Empire sounds like a top paint – does it not have the issue of yellowing that many oil-based paints have when used indoors? My interior eggshell of choice is currently Mylands – it seems very tough and few brush marks for a water-based finish, but a non-yellowing, tough oil-based finish would, I’m sure, outclass it!
