Hand Painted Kitchen Dressers
In Ireland, Adam of My Hand Painted Furniture has a full equipped workshop and amongst his many commissions in 2014 were a series of Hand Painted Kitchen Dressers.
They can be imposing pieces and dated knotty pine dressers respond especially well to the hand painted treatment. Adam runs through his favorites and the how, where and what…
This dresser from Boyle, Co. Roscommon is the classically unfashionable varnished knotty pine, the style that nobody in Ireland wants any more. Anyone who wants to make their hand painted kitchen dresser more contemporary has come to the right place.
Adam has a good eye for picking out details and has great success mixing natural timber tops and handles with eggshell paint. He is very knowledgeable about natural wood finishes and brings this experience into the mix.
Hand Painted Kitchen Dressers
This large dresser was in Creggs, Co. Galway which was painted half in situ, and the rest was dismantled and prepared and painted in the workshop.
A small but important detail – solid ash knobs…

Timber handles are often made from saw mill off-cuts, each one is different. I see this as a positive… and lends character to the piece.
Adam’s big on natural timber finishing, linseed oil is a mainstay but he has a lot of time for Tikkurila Kiva Lacquer which is a water-borne clear and tintable product that comes in 3 sheen levels. he uses either the mid-sheen or the Matt…
Dresser in Killybeggs, Co. Donegal
This was built by the client’s father and had a lot of sentimental value, so Adam worked closely with the client to make sure it had an extended life and he put her colour scheme into action.
the inside panels of the doors are pink. Finished in white eggshell & a variety of primary colours. I was using Colortrend Paints at the time, the best on the market, as Tikkurila was not available in Ireland.
Painted dresser in Moyne, Co. Roscommon & Longford Town
Kitchen painting projects can often extend to free standing furniture, here are a couple of examples where it made sense to bring the dressers into the overall scheme.
One colour, “Pointing” – 2 paint systems!
Seen above in Moyne we used Tikkurila Otex & Empire, for 3 reasons
1 – dark stain
2 – poor condition
3 – a house with a lot of pets.Empire Oil Eggshell provides that extra bit of durability.
In Longford, seen below, we went with my standard pine system; spot prime knots with Zinsser B-I-N, 2 coats Otex followed by 2 coats Helmi Matt…
