Hand-painted kitchen

Listed under Blog, hand-painted kitchen Posted Dec 17 2009

This kitchen was the focal point of a 5-bedroom farmhouse in mid Wales. I project managed the full renovation works in 1996-97. David Collier designed and built the kitchen, I painted and decorated it.

The timber kitchen units were hand-painted and dragged in a “purple” scheme, which fitted in well with the classic green Rayburn oven range, Belfast sink, solid pine worktops, and timber wainscoting.

Doors and end panels were painted in situ with 5 coats of oil paint front and back – a primer, 2 undercoats and 2 eggshells . Each coat was sanded with wet ‘n dry and cleaned with tacky rags. It took 2 days to sand and apply each coat. It then took a day to glaze and drag all the faces of the units. The finish was protected with a couple of coats of clear varnish.

12 years on, the paintwork still looks in good shape, and with the minor wear and tear around the handles and other high traffic areas, it looks more authentic than ever!

There was a brook running under the kitchen floor, but it was diverted to the outside of the building. The floor was layered with a few feet of hardcore for drainage and finished with solid concrete. Just in case any water ever did make its way up the stone walls, we installed a metre-high wainscoting to the exterior walls. This created a ventilated cavity and an elegant decorative feature combined. The pine T&G panelling was capped with a shelf at dado rail height, and painted with a Sikkens Cetol Interior wood treatment.

More examples of recent hand-painted kitchens since I started a new business in South Cheshire.
