In this post, Traditional Painter in Ireland, Adam Bermingham, looks at the process of furniture painting in Donegal!

Working with hand painted furniture in Donegal is much the same as anywhere else, it’s just that the scenery is much more picturesque than almost anywhere else!

Down to work

A few weeks ago I picked up a van full of furniture from a great client just outside Killybegs on the Donegal coast. This is what it looked like when I got it back to the workshop…

furniture before painting

The client was in the process of building a new house, and had very distinctive ideas about what she wanted. The furniture was to be painted in a pallete of colours that I wouldn’t use everyday. A combination of white, pink, green, purple, blue & yellow. With some walnut stain thrown in for good measure. Let’s take a look at the process…

Hand Painted Kitchen Dresser

The furniture was originally built by the client’s father, now 87, but the new house has an ultra modern finish & the furniture needed to complement this. I started with the dresser. It easily detached into top & bottom halves, great for delivery & painting…

After dismantling the base, I cleaned & sanded the entire piece, before applying a coat Colortrend furniture painting in Donegalprimer/undercoat.

I used a variety of brushes including * Proform Picasso & Corona Cody. It then required a fair amount of filler, in this case I used Ronseal Fine Surface

Another sand & another coat of primer & it was time to start topcoats…

Multicolored…

Using a selection of brushes & rollers, 3 different colours; white, pink & green, were applied to specified areas of the dresser.

The door & drawer handles were painted to match the dining room chairs.

lets take a look at the chairs now…

Hand Painted Dining Table & Chairs

The dining table was relatively straight-forward here. Sanding, priming, filling, painting, staining & waxing. Many of these topics have been covered in detail in other blog posts.

The chairs were the real stand out portion of this particular contract. Set these against the traditional style of the table, and the results speak for themselves…

The finish on the chairs was created as follows…

Furniture Painting in Donegal

1. Sand all surfaces well, removing all previous coatings

2. Apply 1 coat of Zinsser Coverstain Primer. I used a 1.5 inch pure bristle Hamilton brush for this

3. Apply 1 coat Colortrend primer/undercoat tinted with 30% top coat, in this case Colortrend Satinwood. I used Corona brushes for this coat

4. Finally, apply 2 coats of Colortrend Satinwood in the 6 different colours, you won’t be disappointed with the results

The contract also comprised of 2 tables to be finished in white to match the other pieces. This is one of them…

In the following images you can see the furniture in its new home overlooking the Donegal coastline. What could be better. The client was overjoyed with the additions to the kitchen of her new house… We both were.
