Fired Earth Hand Painted Kitchens in Silverstone

Marnie Kitchens of Monmouth have been commissioned by Fired Earth to design and install hand painted kitchens in 14 luxury homes in Silverstone Northants. Traditional Painter Paul Barber was asked to paint them.

I recently undertook a contract for Marnie Kitchens of Wales to paint bespoke kitchen furniture on a new housing development in Silverstone Northamptonshire.

Being a Fired Earth project, their own brand acrylic eggshell was specified. After painting a test panel in the eggshell, I found it was very easy to scratch off from the primer underneath, so I decided to apply a first coat of oil-based Zinsser Cover Stain mixed in the top coat colour.

(This course of action is not unusual. Some factory primers are not compatible with “normal” topcoats, so unless you know the exact specification of the primer, it is always best to do a tester to see if it requires a bridging / adhesion coat.)

The oil-based primer coat also allowed for much better coverage from the eggshell.

So, if anyone asks, two tops coats of Fired Earth acrylic eggshell over Zinsser Cover Stain primer works very well.

Both the interior designer from the Banbury Fired Earth Store and the developer, were very pleased with the finished kitchens – as was I, and we are looking forward to continuing on this project in the New Year, as and when the properties become available.

Traditional Painters are nationwide, all working to the same high standards, and it made perfect sense for the kitchen company in Wales to employ Paul Barber in Northampton.

Paul charged standard Traditional Painter local rates, and Marnie’s avoided the hassle and travel and accommodation expense of sending a kitchen painter from Wales. A win-win.

Lovely job Paul. Great attention to detail in the paint spec – that’s what you pay an expert for! I quite like the T&G instead of tiles. Do you think the Fired Earth is durable? What’s the finish like?

9 months ago I hand painted a Welsh dresser with the Fired Earth eggshell and a Corona Cody brush. 9 months on it is still a rather nice finish, even though I say so myself.

The dresser is fully loaded with glasses, books, plates, and holding up very well. One chip on the face of a shelf, the rest, including doors that are slammed and clutched at by grubby little hands are completely undamaged. Will report back next year.

It has little body, I used it over Mythic primer, so the texture of the pine is as nature intended.

Thanks for clarifying that Andy. I used Fired Earth Eggshell many years ago, but never got the chance to go back to see how it fared.
