Dust free sanding with Abranet
Mirka’s Abranet sanding system is almost, but not completely dust free. (When you sand a flat area, it is dust free, but as you near an edge, dust is pushed off the edge, beyond the reach of the suction.)
The videos show a) how abrasive Abranet actually is. and b) how effective it is at reducing dust.
There is no going back to the old days of a quick sanding of a panel, no vacuum extraction.
The suction through a sanding block or sander is very impressive, and in normal use, you won’t create any dust to speak of.
You don’t need a 27 HP extraction machine either. A Henry will serve you well on small scale work. However big and beefy your vacuum might be, you just need to keep your filters clean and empty the bags regularly. They fill especially fast when sanding wall areas.
The Abranet abrasive can be cut to size and used on the Festools Pocket sander too. For fiddly woodwork, this is a pretty efficient set up and is a welcome addition to my tool kit.
Nearly 3 years on, I maintain that Abranet is still the number one best thing to happen in painting and decorating. If you want to check the principle without breaking the bank, hunt down an Abranet starter kit for about £30 and see the magic for yourself.
The Mirka Abranet abrasives range at MyPaintbrush is growing before our eyes, starting with the *110 volt 6″ Mirka DEROS kits with matching discs in bumper packs 5″ and *6″ ; and the 115mm wide Abranet rolls should be in beginning of April 2015 as well as gold flex and standard abranet
