Muraspec specialist Russ Pike at work at NCN
I was talking to fellow master decorator, Russ Pike a Muraspec specialist in Nottingham, who told me he recently completed another two-day training course with Muraspec on their digital wall coverings. He also hung a large mural at NCN, the tech training skills college in Nottingham, where he lectures part time.
I’ve been hanging Muraspec contract wallcoverings for years, but learnt some new tips & tricks these past few days, (50mm cushion pins to plumb up, for one) which is what its all about, isn’t it? Some of their adhesives are so aggressive.
Russ also told me that he has introduced Muraspec to the College. NCN are planning several areas throughout seven site campuses with feature walls such as this one where he hung £1000 worth of material supplied by Muraspec.

Russ has been put forward as nominated contractor for the other work, so this one acts as a nice showcase. Talking of shows, Russ had an audience of about 15 watching him hang the mural. Nice painters pants.
Modern decorating materials for apprentices
One common theme when decorators are talking about apprentice courses, is that trainees don’t seem to get much exposure to bang up to date decorating materials. Russ is very aware of this. He has been working with Dulux who designed the rest of the college reception area and supplied the paint. He is also currently speaking with Mythic and Mirka to get them in to educate the students on the latest greatest high performance eco paints and Abranet dust-free sanding kit. So Nottingham painting apprentices are definitely getting a very focussed and contemporary education. Hope they are listening.
Jonathan Graham, @JGdecorator another good friend of this site is also lecturing to trade craft decorating apprentices up in York, and likewise is trying his level best to introduce the students to the latest products being used regularly now by the best painters and decorators in the UK. Let’s hope they are listening too, because many of the coatings that old school painters have relied on for years simply won’t be around in the all water-based world that is fast developing.
